Introduction to WACK Groups: BiS

BiS, short for “Brand-new Idol Society,” is an idol group formed in 2010 with the concept of “a group of four people who study idols, try to become idols, and want to become idols.” The collective name for their fans is “KENKYUIN.”
Since their founding in 2010, the group has disbanded twice and is currently in its third term as BiS. However, it has been announced that the group will disband for the third time with a live performance on 12 January 2025.
In 2010, Pour Lui, who had been active as a solo singer, expressed her desire to form an idol group when she and her manager, Junnosuke Watanabe, visited the music distribution and information website OTOTOY for promotion. This led to an open audition for the selection of members, and the group began its activities in November 2010. With the motto of “self-sufficiency,” the members created their own choreography and booked events in the early stages of their activities, which were documented on OTOTOY.
The sound production was handled by Kenta Matsukuma. Their live performances, which combined a rock sound with emotional melodies and lyrics that reflected the group’s situation, created a frenzy never before seen in the idol scene. The band also received songs from artists who had made history in the Japanese band scene, such as Toru Hidaka, Noriaki Tsuda (KEMURI), Akihiro Namba (Hi-STANDARD / NAMBA69), and Takeshi Ueda (AA= / THE MAD CAPSULE MARKETS), acting as a bridge between the rock and idol scenes.
The music video for their first single “My Ixxx,” which featured the members running around in the woods almost naked, sparked significant controversy. Their intense promotional activities, including a 24-hour live show and a 100km marathon, also attracted attention. These actions were considered shocking for an idol group, leading to a surge in media interest.
On 8 July 2014, BiS held a live concert titled ” Budokan in the BiS way ” which was attended by around 6,000 people. After this performance, the group disbanded.
On 8 July 2016, two years after their disbandment, Pour Lui, Watanabe, and Matsukuma announced that the group would be restarting with new members. After a three-day, two-night training camp audition, the group relaunched with a five-member lineup. They introduced the “BiS.LEAGUE” system, where fans voted to divide the members into BiS 1st and BiS 2nd, but in 2019, the members requested to disband. In response, the group disbanded for the second time on 11 May 2019.
On 11 June 2019, just one month after their second dissolution, the third term of BiS began with new members. They sealed the songs of the previous BiS members and focused on creating new music. The group adopted a guerrilla style for their releases, distributing sound sources on cassette tapes, and toured with band members Toru Hidaka (guitarist of THE STARBEMS), Noriaki Tsuda (bassist of KEMURI, THE REDEMPTION), and RONZI (drummer of BRAHMAN, OAU), continuing the rock route they had taken before.
In April 2024, the group returned to its original motto of “self-sufficiency,” with the members handling booking and promotion themselves. However, after much discussion, they concluded that it would be difficult to continue their activities and announced their third and final breakup. The finale of the third BiS will take place on 12 January 2025.
