Introduction to WACK Groups: ASP

January 01, 2025

ASP stands for “ANTi SOCiETY PUNKS,” and their fans are collectively known as “Narazumono(Rogue).” The current members of the group include YUMEKA NOWKANA?, NAMELESS, MOG RYAN, MATiLDER TWiNS, WONKER TWiNS, CCCCCC, and RiONTOWN.

On 27 March 2021, Junnosuke Watanabe announced the launch of the group ASP at the WACK Joint Training Camp Audition 2021. The event was broadcast live on Nico Nico Live, where four members appeared wearing black capes and masks. Initially, details about the group would be revealed once their official Twitter account reached 15,000 followers, but due to the unexpected surge in followers, the release of information was moved to when they hit 20,000 followers.

Their first one-man live concert, held in May 2021, featured an unusual ticket sales method. Instead of regular ticket sales, a lucky draw was held the day before the concert, with the winner needing to win the fourth prize to attend. The first prize was a rice cooker, the second prize was Matsuzaka beef, and the fifth prize allowed the winner to watch the concert in a cinema.

In addition to these unique events, the group made guerrilla visits to all 75 Tower Records stores over a four-day period, where they left free papers with the members’ handwritten notes and a limited number of ‘the MAN CALLiNG’ CDs at the counters. These CDs were placed in limited quantities in the sales areas, along with other WACK-style promotional measures.

In their early years, ASP’s music was predominantly punk. However, following their major label debut in August 2022, they incorporated elements of hyperpop and hip-hop into their sound. Their repertoire has since expanded to include songs blending alternative rock and electronic music. They have collaborated with international artists, such as Wargasm, a London-based rock unit that produced their song “MAKE A MOVE,” and Maxim, frontman of The Prodigy, who created the original track “TOXiC iNVASiON.”

In 2024, ASP embarked on a 47-prefecture tour across Japan. On October 8, they held their largest solo concert to date at the Nippon Budokan in Tokyo. Alongside their alternative and edgy music, the audience was treated to mesmerizing psychedelic visual effects, displayed across nearly 10 large screens set up on stage.

ASP is also the only group to have participated in all of WACK’s regular live performances in the UK, known as “WACK in the UK,” and is expected to continue playing an active role both in Japan and internationally in the future.
